A Gentleman’s Review: Schwarzkopf Professional [3D]MEN Range

Sometimes, we receive some great press releases in our inboxes and have to turn them down as the products are aimed at a male audience. Luckily, I have now managed to recruit a male guinea pig!

Introducing A Gentleman’s Review – a new feature on Beauty Snippets featuring my fellow male blogger whom we shall call Mr. L.

I’ve been using a variety of Schwarzkopf products since I was in high school (Their Osis Thrill Fibre Gum is an excellent all round hair product) so when I was asked to review their revamped 3D range, I jumped at the chance.

“the Schwarzkopf Professional [3D]MEN range was the first brand engineered specifically for men, tackling the three key dimensions of masculine hair care: strengthening hair, refreshing the scalp, and activating the roots. The revitalised [3D]MEN range is available across all Australian retail outlets from March 2015.”

The two products I received are the Strong Hold Gel and the Texture Clay.

The texture was a smooth, light paste, unlike other matt finish waxes I’ve used before. My first instinct was that this product would be excellent for people with light, soft hair. When I washed it out of my hands, it felt slick and slightly greasy but came off without any soap. This is always a plus! I can’t imagine what products are doing to your hair when you can’t even get if off your skin!

The Hold

Do as I say and not as I do! I normally apply my hair products to damp hair. This is because my hair naturally sticks up, it’s hard, dry, coarse and very thick. I went about my daily routine when I found that this product simply didn’t hold my hair like my other products normally do. Like most guys, I applied more. And more. Then realised it wasn’t working. Upon reading the instructions (oh wow! Instructions!) I discovered this product is for DRY HAIR (duh).

When applied to dry hair, this product shines (not literally as it’s a matt product), the hold was light but managed to keep everything in place. The look (as it states) is a dry matt finish however upon playing with the amount of dampness in my hair I was also able to achieve a semi slick look (just had to apply a little more product).

The hold isn’t rock solid and that’s great if that’s the type of hold you’re looking for.

Does it wash out?

Easy. As I anticipated when washing it off my hands, this product gave me no dramas and didn’t require a double wash.

Conclusion

Although not suited to my hair type, this product would be excellent for those of you who have lighter, thinner hair or hair that isn’t as coarse. Overall it’s great, the scent is subtle and barely noticeable and it washes out easily.

It’s been a while since I’ve used a gel. Mainly because I’ve changed my style however I do know what I look for when applying a gel and had a few things in mind when trying this out.

The Texture

Schwarzkopf Professional [3D]MEN Strong Hold Gel

Schwarzkopf Professional [3D]MEN Strong Hold Gel

This product is a semi thick consistency, but not like the cheaper tubs of gel you find in the supermarket. The product was clear (see above) and there was no presence of bubbles like you see in other gels. It isn’t overly sticky and washed off my hands with ease.

The Hold

Unlike some gels which are thick and goopy, this gel felt light without being sticky. Although I had trouble with the loose fly-aways on my hair part, the parts that were down, once set, stayed that way for the duration of the day. The hold was hard but not uncomfortable like some gels. I definitely had the confidence that my hairstyle would be consistent through the day.

Does it wash out?

I never really have issues with gels washing out, often they’re water based and this is not different. It washed out easily.

Conclusion

If you’re into a wetter look and don’t mind having your hair slightly harder and not pliable, this gel is for you. There was next to no scent once applied and I had no issues with the hold.
