What’s In My Travel Bag – Hong Kong and Singapore Version

Firstly, I’d like to apologise for the lack of posts. I went on a whirlwind trip to Singapore and Hong Kong for 10 days and didn’t have time to schedule posts! But now I’m back :)

I love seeing what skincare, beauty, cosmetic products people take with them on their holidays. This was what I brought with me:

In my carry-on:

20150705_122539

Lanolips – couldn’t find my 101 Ointment in time for this trip, so I opted for the lip balm to prevent my lips from drying out.
Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream – this is a super intensive hand cream that’s great to combat the dryness that comes with the recycled airplane air. It gets absorbed quickly into my skin and doesn’t leave a greasy mess behind.
Sheet Mask – we all know how drying the air can be on the plane so a face mask always helps to keep my face hydrated. I like to travel with a sheet mask (or two if it’s a long haul flight) and put it on once I get settled in.
Dermalogica Ultrasoothing Eye Serum – once I remove the sheet mask, I apply some eye cream and moisturise and off to sleep I go! Right before landing, I’ll apply a bit more to brighten up my eyes.
Kora Organics Energising Citrus Mist – whenever my skin is feeling a bit dry and tight, I’ll spray this mist. It’s refreshing and brightens up my skin instantly.
Eyedrops – the dry air irritates my eyes so eye drops are an essential!
Hand sanitiser – cos germs everywhere.

What I actually packed for 10 days in locations with high humidity. On holidays, I tend to wear as little makeup as possible as I like to use that time to go exploring!

Skincare:
Cleanser – Bioderma Sebium Purifying Foaming Gel. I’ve used this before and I know it works well with my skin so packed a sample size one on the trip to use it up!
Exfoliator – Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. This is my HG exfoliator. It’s so gentle but works effectively.
Toner – Kora Organics Energising Citrus Mist. Multi-tasking :)
Moisturiser – Nivea Q10 Day Cream. My favourite everyday moisturiser which works well as a base as well.
Makeup remover – Bioderma Sebium Purifying Cleansing Micelle Solution*. Again, another HG. My go-to makeup remover! Feels like water but removes EVERY trace of makeup.
Night cream – Nivea Q10 Night Cream. Not greasy, and wake up with soft and hydrated skin. Winning.
Eye cream – Dermalogica Ultrasoothing Eye Serum*. Gentle and keeps the eye area moisturised.
Serum – Hydraluron*. The different climate caused havoc with my skin for a bit and Hydraluron helped keep it moisturised and soft.

Cosmetics:
Clarins BB Skin Perfecting Cream* – I’ve used this so much and can’t believe I haven’t written a review on it yet. It’s one of my HG products because it provides medium coverage yet feels so light on the skin.
Australis ACONTOUR* – All about that contour game!
NARS Luster blush and theBalm Frat Boy – I opted for a dusty rose and peachy blush as they seem to be the most flattering on my skintone.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow – Again, another HG. Perfect brows that stay put in the humid!
NARS Creamy Radiant Concealer – Lack of sleep meant heavy eye bags and I knew that this NARS concealer had its work cut out. Did not disappoint!
Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes eyeliner – Didn’t pack any eyeshadows with me so for some definition, I packed this. Long-lasting and does not smudge.
Benefit They’re Real mascara – Knowing that it was the Summer in Hong Kong and Singapore, I knew I had to pack some waterproof, hard to remove with water products to make it through the trip. This Benefit mascara is one of my favourites. It holds a curl well and even has its own remover.
Edward Bess Ultra Slick lipstick in Night Romance, Bite Beauty Sucre matte cream lip crayon and NARS Velvet Matte lip pencil in Dragon Girl – opted for one everyday, one for night and one which can multitask for any occasion.
Batiste Dry Shampoo – ok, so technically not a makeup product but a beauty product nonetheless and one I cannot live without!

#30blush – Week 1 Recap

Whilst browsing Instagram, I came across a “challenge” that was set by Bloomin Beauty (@bloominbeauty on Instagram) and Techno Cupcake (@technocupcake on Instgram) where for a whole 30 days, you’ll use a different blush each day and then do a recap at the end.

Now, I tend to always opt for the same products everyday. The “you never fail me” products. Yes, we all have them! And I tend to neglect a lot of my other makeup. So when I saw that Emma (@emmabovary on Instagram) and Vita (@makingupvita on Instagram) were taking part, I joined in too. And cos blush fiend.

This is my week 1 recap, complete with swatches!

theBalm Frat Boy

theBalm Frat Boy

The Balm Frat Boy – one of my HGs. It gives me the most perfect amount of pink flush with a bit of coral. Just perfect.

MAC Secret beauty powder blush

MAC Secret beauty powder blush

MAC Secret beauty powder blush (limited edition) – A flattering shade of plum/mauve on my olive tanned skin.

Pout Berry Babe blush

Pout Berry Babe

Pout Berry Babe (discontinued) – A bright Barbie hot pink. All that is needed is a light swirl of a stippling brush.

Tarte Tipsy

Tarte Tipsy

Tarte Tipsy – Matte coral blush. Definitely one that is right up my alley. Very flattering on my skintone especially in Summer.

MAC Cantaloupe

MAC Cantaloupe

MAC Cantaloupe – As if you can’t tell already but I love peachy coral blushes and MAC Cantaloupe is no exception.

NARS Luster

NARS Luster

NARS Luster – Yes, continuing on with my favourite shade of blush. NARS Luster is a glowy apricot. Just so glowy.

Laura Mercier Crushed Hazelnut

Laura Mercier Crushed Hazelnut

Laura Mercier Crushed Hazelnut – I don’t own many ‘nude’ blushes. I tend to opt for some colour on my cheeks. But sometimes, you just want some subtle definition and glow.

And some quick and dirty swatches of them all to show you (well, justify to myself) that all my blushes are different. Swatches are in order of listing above :)

Brand Spotlight Series – NARS #8

Lucky last.

NARS Malibu multiple

NARS Malibu multiple.

They say…

The original multi-purpose stick for eyes, cheeks, lips and body. Its unique, creamy formula blends effortlessly to provide sheer color for creating shimmering accents, contours or dynamic highlights on all skin tones. Creates perfect, glowing complexions and is conveniently designed for failproof application.

Pinkish brown.

I say…

It is a deep red wine colour with hints of plum & brown tones. It does have some subtle gold shimmer but this is hardly noticeable when applied. In the tube, it looks daunting & scary. I mean when I first saw it, I was just kind of like WTF? What a dark shade. How would you ever wear it? Lo & behold, I started experimenting with NARS Malibu multiple & found that it is quite a universal shade afterall.

On my medium-tone Asian olive skin (about NC30-35 or thereabouts), it, surprisingly, gave my cheeks a healthy rosy flush.

I applied it by dabbing NARS Malibu multiple on my cheeks & then blending it with my fingers. It stays dewy & glowy & doesn’t just disappear & mattify throughout the day. In terms of wear, it lasts all day on me!

I’ve also tried wearing NARS Malibu multiple on my lips. It dries down to a powder-like finish on my lips so I find that I have to use a bit of clear lip balm so they don’t look flaky.

As for wearing it as an eyeshadow, I haven’t tried as I tend to steer away from shades like this on my eyes. Makes me look scary lol.

Natural light

NARS Malibu multiple is sold as a multi-use product but I find that this particular shade works best as a blusher.

These multiples are freaking huge & the price tag reflects this. For $39USD/$79AUD, you get a whooping 0.50 oz/14.2g of product & seeing as you only use a little bit each time, this thing will last you a lifetime (or two…)

Brand Spotlight Series – NARS #6

Now, this last one isn’t technically a blush per say but..whatevs.

I present to you, my HG highlighter – NARS Albatross highlighting blush powder.

NARS Albatross highlighting powder blush

They say…

Luminous glow.

This truly versatile highlighting product may be worn on its own or layered over other color products for added highlight and dimension. The soft shimmering color will add instant radiance to any complexion, and may be used on the face and body.

I say…

In the pan, NARS Albatross highlighting blush powder is deceptively boring. White with shimmer. Yawn.

Natural light

However, once applied, it gives you that elusive ‘glow from within’ that you’ve been searching for. Okay, maybe not you YOU but me! It gives me the glow I’ve been on the hunt for. It has this amazing warm yellow golden glow that I just love. The shimmer is very finely milled & this contributes to that glow as it doesn’t look greasy & you don’t look like a disco ball 😉

Natural light

Please note that this was swatched heavily & obviously when you apply this, it’d be with a much lighter hand!

Brand Spotlight Series – NARS #5

We’re nearing the end of my brand spotlight series on NARS. Yippee!

The fifth blush in this series is NARS Torrid blush.

NARS Torrid blush

They say…

Coral with shimmer.

I say…

NARS Torrid blush is very similar to NARS Orgasm blush. It may be a shade or two darker than Nars Orgasm blush. In comparison to NARS Orgasm blush, NARS Torrid blush is much much more pigmented & the golden shimmer is quite subtle. It is much more of a true coral as opposed to NARS Orgasm’s peachy pink coral.

NARS Torrid would work very well on those with darker skintones as it’s pigmentation is unbelievable! I use a duo-fibre brush similar to MAC’s 188 brush to apply this.

Natural light

NARS Torrid, Orgasm & Deep Throat are all essentially from the same colour family with different nuances here & there & with different amounts of peach v pink in each. I will have a comparison swatch picture posted up for you in my NARS blush round-up post.

Brand Spotlight Series – NARS #4

We’re nearly at the end of my NARS blush collection!

Today, NARS Gina blush.

NARS Gina blush

They say…

Tangerine.

I say…

First of all – Francois Nars, you are not a man of many words, are you?

Secondly, NARS Gina blush is a straight up matte (no shimmer here) peach. In the pan & when swatched, it does pull a bit orange but on my cheeks, it becomes a muted peach. I love the matte texture – it isn’t chalky at all & very pigmented!

Natural light

NARS Gina blush was my first matte blush ever & before that, I had minor reservations about matte blushes – would they be chalky? Are they hard to apply? Would it look blotchy? NARS Gina blush weren’t any of those. Such a dream to apply & has convinced me to try other matte blushes.

Brand Spotlight Series – NARS #3

Another risque named blush by NARS – Deep Throat.

NARS Deep Throat blush

NARS Deep Throat blush is a great alternative to NARS Orgasm blush especially for those with darker skintones.

They say…

Peach with shimmer.

I say…

NARS Deep Throat blush is like the much pinker sister to NARS Orgasm blush. NARS Deep Throat blush is similar to NARS Orgasm blush in that they’re from the same family in terms of colour. The shimmer in NARS Deep Throat blush is much more subtle than its counterpart in NARS Orgasm blush.

In my opinion, I feel like NARS Deep Throat blush is much more universal than NARS Orgasm blush. For one – it is much more pigmented. Secondly, the shade, whilst more pink, is more natural on skintones ranging from fair to dark.

Natural light

It seems as though the ladies who didn’t love NARS Orgasm blush definitely liked/loved NARS Deep Throat blush.

Brand Spotlight Series – NARS #2

Today, I am showing you another favourite of mine from the NARS blush collection. The blush is called Luster.

NARS Luster blush

They say…

Sheer golden apricot

I say…

Luster is a glowy apricot/peach shade that is just perfect for Summer.

Sure, it does look mighty unimpressive in the pan but once applied, it imparts the most natural glow possible. The shimmer in Luster is very subtle unlike Orgasm’s shimmer which are very noticeable in the pan.

I find that Luster compliments my Asian olive skintone nicely.

Natural light

I love using Luster on its own or pairing it with other blushes. My favourite combination is applying NARS Gina blush first & then topping it with NARS Luster – my go-to Summer blush combination.

Brand Spotlight Series – NARS #1

Today, I am kicking off the Brand Spotlight Series on NARS with the most famous & coveted blush of all time – Orgasm.

NARS Orgasm blush

This was my first blush when I was starting out & I used it every single day for a year – hence the pan! It is also the only blush in my stash showing pan lol.

NARS Orgasm blush has been hyped up as the most universal & flattering shade of blush for every woman on Earth. However, after reading other reviews on the blush, some ladies just don’t love it :(

I’m on the ‘love this blush’ party. It is my default blush when I don’t want to put too much thought into what shade of blusher would compliment the rest of my makeup.

They say

NARS Orgasm makes cheeks blush a perfect pinky-peach flush and subtly highlights with accents of golden shimmer. The perennially pleasing, universally flattering shade is again and again a makeup artist and beauty editor favorite.

I say…

The description by NARS is pretty much spot on. Pink-peach base with golden shimmer. The noticeable shimmer in the pan translates beautifully as a natural glow on the cheeks.

Natural light

As you can see from the swatches, it is quite sheer. The pinky-peach base colour is not as pigmented but that’s the beauty of this blush. Sheer enough that you won’t screw up the application but there is enough of a hint of colour to give your cheeks a lift. Orgasm’s sheerness is what I think makes it unfavourable to some ladies. I don’t think those with darker skintones would like Orgasm as it would barely show up! However, there are other alternatives for darker skin tones in NARS’ blush range – stay tuned for these blushes :)

Overall, Orgasm is one of my top blushes as it gives my cheeks a hint of colour without going overboard.

Mecca

I am still in shock at paying Australian retail for department store make-up. It’s so unfair everything is so marked up here :(

Just wanted to praise the services at Mecca in Myer Pitt St in the Sydney CBD. This was my second time in a Mecca store. The first time was at Bondi and the service was atrocious! I didn’t even get any service. The SAs there sized me up and probably thought because I was young, I couldn’t possibly afford their marked up products. Pfft. In contrast, my second time in a Mecca store was awesome :) As soon as I walked in and headed towards the NARS set up, I was greeted by a smiling SA on the other side of the NAR “counter” :) And then I was browsing for about 5 minutes, swatching away and another SA and offered her expertise. She even complimented my blush teehehe 😀 So what did I end up buying?

I walked away with a lighter wallet and NARS Deep Throat blush. It’s described as being a “peach with shimmer” and many have recommended this shade if Orgasm doesn’t work for your skintone. I haven’t swatched Orgasm and Deep Throat side by side but just from looking at them, Orgasm has more pink in it whereas Deep Throat seems like it has a deeper peach in it :)

In Australia, I think only Mecca stocks NARS and sells the blushes for $62AUD (for 0.15oz/4.5g of product). In tough times like these, a saving is a saving so I recommend kissandmakeupny if you wanna get your NARS fix and save ~$20AUD :) They sell the NARS blushes for $25USD (RRP in the US. Same price if you were buying from Sephora. No mark ups!) and they charge a flat rate shipping charge of $7.95 for worldwide :) The site also stocks other brands such as Shu Uemura, Laura Mercier and Kiehls so happy shopping! I might stock up on some more NARS, hehe.
